Our Psychological Services

At Waves Wellbeing, we understand that finding the right service for you and your child can be a long and difficult journey. We offer person-centred assessments which focus on identifying your child’s areas of strengths and needs.  We offer psychological intervention for adolescents and young adults  who present with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. 

Unfortunately, our waiting list for all services is currently closed as we cannot keep up with demand based on our current resources. We hope to open our waiting list again in June 2024. We apologise for this inconvenience.

Psychoeducational Assessment

We recommend a Psychoeducational / Learning Difficulty Assessment where there are specific concerns relating to your child’s learning. The purpose of a Psychoeducational Assessment is to identify learning difficulties such as specific learning disabilities (i.e. dyslexia / dyscalculia) or general learning disabilities. A psychoeducational assessment includes:

  • Collateral information from parents
  • Assessment of Cognitive Ability
  • Assessment of Attainment
  • Review of school reports
  • Feedback
  • Comprehensive psychological report accepted by the HSE and Department of Education.

General Clinical Psychology Assessment

We recommend a general clinical psychology assessment for children who present with developmental delays and/or difficulties in managing their emotions and engage in behaviours that impact on their ability to participate in age-appropriate daily tasks. This assessment includes:

  • A Parental Interview 
  • Assessment of Cognitive Ability
  • Assessment of Adaptive Functioning
  • Assessment of Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties
  • Collateral information from school
  • Review of existing reports
  • Liaison with other services, such as GP, when necessary
  • Feedback 
  • Comprehensive psychological report accepted by the HSE and Department of Education.

Autism Assessment

We provide comprehensive neuro-affirmative and strengths-based  multidisciplinary Autism assessments in line with international guidelines. Our Autism assessments are conducted by Dr McMahon in collaboration with an experienced Speech and Language Therapist. Our Autism assessments consists of:

  • A Parental Interview 
  • Assessment of Cognitive Ability, when indicated
  • Assessment of Adaptive Functioning
  • Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised
  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
  • Collateral information from school
  • Review of relevant reports
  • Liaison with other services, such as GP, when necessary
  • Feedback
  • Comprehensive psychological report accepted by the HSE and Department of Education

ADHD Assessments

We recommend an ADHD assessment for children (over the age of 6 years old) who present with difficulties related to emotional regulation, concentrating, sitting in their seat in school, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. This assessment includes:

  • A Parental Interview 
  • Assessment of Cognitive Ability
  • Assessment of Adaptive Functioning
  • Assessment of Characteristics of ADHD using standardized measures
  • Collateral information from school
  • Review of existing reports
  • Liaison with other services, such as GP, when necessary
  • Feedback 
  • Comprehensive psychological report accepted by the HSE and Department of Education.
  • Please note that we do not complete the Qb test as a part of our ADHD assessments as the Qb test is not currently recommended in best practice guidelines for ADHD assessments. 
  • Should your child be identified as meeting the criteria for ADHD, we are unable to provide pharmacological intervention. You must attend a child psychiatrist if you wish to avail of medication.
